Cay of the National Park Service, read at a meeting of the North Shore Historical Assembly at the park (July 29, 1938), describes the region of Gooseberry River and Falls, purchase of the land by the State of Minnesota from the estate of Wisconsin Senator William F. Vilas, and the development of the state park. The paper is accompanied by a copy of a letter (8 leaves; July 5th, 1938) to Cay from Henry S. Butler, a lawyer who represented the Vilas estate in connection with the Gooseberry Falls property, that gives information on William F. Vilas and the acquisition of the park property.
